Piano Learning – Learn How to Play the Piano

Music is a universal language. In order to master any language, one needs to learn the reading and speaking skills of that language.   When we guide the children in piano learning - learn how to play the piano, we shall use the same approach and same thinking.

In piano practice and piano learning, If you play the wrong note in a new piece, do not start playing from the beginning. Over and over again, piano players mistakenly think that by starting all over they will get it right the next time. No, that is not how it works. If you play wrong notes, just keep the rhythm and move on to the next phrase or paragraph.

Imagine that you are playing in a band. If you play the wrong note, do you start all over? No.  You keep moving on to the next section with the rest of the band instruments.

“How am I going to get it right?” you ask. You see, the pace is important. Take any piece and start counting slowly. You can count 1 and, 2 and, 3 and, etc. When you count slowly you have a better chance of playing the right note. Even if you miss the note, you should still be able to move on.

Another secret is always to keep your eyes ahead of your fingers. Too often, piano players keep their eyes on the same notes that their fingers are playing. Try to make an effort to have your eyes glance ahead of the note that your finger is on at that moment.  At least, your eyes should be one or two notes ahead of what you are reading.
