Piano Learning – Learn How to Play the Piano

An acoustic piano is mostly made of wood. The iron frame is used to hold the strings in place.  Wood is susceptible to moisture and temperature.  Therefore, to maintain a constant temperature and humidity level around the room and the piano is important.  Varying levels of temperature and humidity can cause hammers and dampers to stick and the piano will go out of tune more often.

Avoid placing the piano where there are draughts, vents or direct sunlight.  Also avoid sitting an upright against an exterior wall that gets a lot of sun.   This can create large temperature wall that gets a lot of sun exposure and the variation of temperature is very large.  It is best to place the upright against the inside wall.

Keep the grand piano closed when you have finished your piano learning session.  This will help in eliminate the dust and moisture away from from the strings and will keep the piano sounding nicer for longer.  Grand piano that have been left open for a long time can sound a bit “honky tonk”, they strings may rust and lose their sparkle.  Keeping the piano closed help to preserve everything inside, such as the strings, dampers, hammers and the moving piano accessories and piano parts.

Did your piano tuned at least once in a year?  Whether you think it is need or not, is not important.   The piano may sound in tune, however the pitch of the piano as a whole may drop slightly.  If a piano is left like this over a few years, it becomes difficult to bring it back up to pitch.  The tone suffers and it is also harder to play along with other tuned instruments.

The wooden cabinet of the piano shall be cleaned with a clean, damp, lint-free cotton cloth.   Make sure it is damps, as this will stop any dust on the piano acting as an abrasive and scratching the surface.

Pianos don’t like to be stored away or rarely play.  The best things you can do for your piano is to play it regularly.
