In Piano Learning, fingering is key to playing any basic scale on the piano. You must follow the correct form for your right and left hands as prescribe in this article, and we are leading you towards a smooth C major scale.

Step 1
Before we start off, we will number all your fingers. On the right hand, the thumb receives the number “1″, the pointer finger 2, middle finger 3, ring finger 4, and pinkie 5. For the left hand is numbered opposite. The pinkie finger is 1, down to the thumb which is 5. Every scale is made up of eight notes, beginning on the first note and going up or down the keyboard (eight keys) to end on the same note an octave higher or lower. Since there are only five fingers on each hand, you will need to cross over fingers to play smoothly.

Step 2
Find middle C by locating the white key in the center of the keyboard directly below the middle set of double black keys. Place the right thumb on this note, the next note (D) is played with finger 2 (pointer finger), and the third note(E)with the third finger (middle). Instead of playing the fourth note with the fourth finger, cross the thumb under to play the fourth note (F) with the thumb. The rest of the notes up to the next C are played with fingers 1-5, the thumb through the pinkie for notes G, A, B, C.

Step 3
To play the scale with the left hand, find the C located one octave (eight notes) below middle C. Place the pinkie on the note and play. For notes C-G play with fingers 1-5. Once you have played the note G, cross the middle finger over the thumb to play A. The pointer finger then plays B, and the thumb plays middle C.

Step 4
To play the right hand going back down to middle C, begin at C one octave above middle C with the pinkie. Play notes C, B, A, G, F down the scale with fingers 5, 4, 3, 2, then 1(which is your thumb). Then, to play the last three notes, cross your middle finger over the thumb and play E with the middle finger. Last two notes, D and middle C are played with fingers 2 and then 1.

Step 5
To play the scale going down from middle C with the left hand, begin with the thumb on middle C, play B with the pointer finger, and A with the third finger. Then, cross the thumb under the middle finger to play G with the thumb. Then rest of the notes are played with fingers 4 to 1, pointer finger to pinkie.
