Step 1

Learn to read musical notation. Reading music will help you become a better musician all the way around. There are a lot of piano players who get by without ever reading music, but being able to look at a piano score, analyze it, and play what you read will improve your piano playing. Step 2

Study piano chords. Memorize them not only by basic shapes, but understand how chords are built. When you know what notes from a major or minor scale it takes to build chords, you know longer rely solely on shapes, you can build any chord someone calls out. This also opens the door for you to build chords in alternate inversions, rearranging the notes to archive various tonalities. Step 3

Consider using an online piano course such as pianotricks.com. This course uses a combination of videos and written material to help you read piano music, structure chords, and sight read melodies. There is also an extensive library of lessons available that cover every facet of piano playing, including various playing techniques. The website is free. You don’t even need to sign up for an account to take advantage of the website immediately.

Step 4

Expand your horizons musically. Don’t focus on playing the only type of music you enjoy. That’s what you’ll primarily play, but try tackling sheet music in other genres. Jazz, because it is so complex, will be one of the best types of music to attempt. Don’t be discouraged if you find it difficult at first. You can purchase jazz sheet music from a music store or find free jazz sheets online (see Resources).

Step 5

Play with other musicians. If you have friends who play, form a little band and play regularly together. Nothing will improve your ability to play in time than to work with other musicians. When you play alone, you are in your own little world, playing to your own drummer. Working with other musicians forces you to listen to the music, which will improve your playing by leaps and bounds.
